Lynn Minmay – Macross: Do You Remember Love?

Anime Expo 2013

First worn: Ani-Magic 2000

Lynn Minmay, the idol who saved the universe by singing! Minmay was probably my first exposure to Japanese idols. I watched Robotech on TV in the late 90’s and rented the English dub of the “Macross: Do You Remember Love?” movie on VHS.Β  I love the song “Ai Oboete Imasu ka”, it is one of my favorite songs to sing at karaoke!Β  And this pink and white outfit, which I absolutely adore for obvious reasons, is definitely a classic.

My mom originally sewed this costume for me in 2000, and I wore it to Ani-Magic 2000, where Mari Iijima, the Japanese voice, singer, and songwriter for Minmay, was a guest!Β  I love her voice!Β  I was excited to hear her sing live and even got a photo with her!

Over time, the white parts of my original costume turned yellow (probably acetate satin, never use acetate). In 2012 I remade those parts of the costume and added a wig (cosplayers didn’t often wear wigs in 2000).Β  I already had the blue wig, so I just made a clip-in side curl.Β  I did a Macross skit at Anime Expo 2012 with some friends.Β  It turns out Macross is one of my husband’s favorite anime series, and he had always wanted to be Hikaru, so I made the TV version uniform for him (even though it didn’t match my costume).
