StarCraft 20th Anniversary

This year is StarCraft’s 20th anniversary!  Here is Blizzard’s commemorative video:

I love that Tassadar is in the center of the 20th anniversary promotional image, even though he was not in StarCraft II (sorry, Artanis).  Tassadar is my favorite character!  I also love his ridiculous squint… what is even going on here?? Haha.

It may seem odd given my personal aesthetics, but StarCraft is one of my favorite games of all time. I have always been a fan of the strategy genre, whether real-time or turn-based.  StarCraft has a great story, great characters, great gameplay, and plenty of humor.  I was in high school when the first StarCraft was released.  When I went to college, my friends and I would take advantage of the dorm LAN and have weekend-long StarCraft parties almost every weekend.  We would start Friday evening after classes were over and play all the way until Sunday evening, at which point we would stop so we could do whatever homework and studying we needed to do for Monday.  I miss those grand 4v4 battles, they were a lot of fun.  StarCraft is also one of my dad’s favorite games, so even after my college days, I played a lot of StarCraft at home with my dad and sister.  We had a tradition of ushering in the new year while playing StarCraft… although actually, that’s just what we did most nights anyway.

Here’s a pic of me wearing my StarCraft: Remastered Protoss T-shirt from the Blizzard Gear Store!  I love the stylized look of the Remastered tees.

After many, many years of playing Brood Wars, I was super excited about StarCraft II finally happening!  I loved Wings of Liberty and enjoyed Heart of the Swarm as well, but sadly Legacy of the Void fell short for me.  As a Protoss player, I was especially looking forward to the final installment and conclusion to the story, but I felt like the story suddenly took a nosedive.  The campaign was also noticeably shorter than the previous two, so I felt like my beloved Protoss race was cheated out of its time in the spotlight.  The story felt rushed and wasn’t as fleshed out as I had hoped, and then it felt like the Protoss struggle was trivialized because it turned out to be irrelevant to the resolution (which seemed to suddenly turn from sci-fi to space fantasy).  As a lady, I was disappointed in Selendis’s lack of presence, after all the hype when she was introduced in Wings of Liberty.  I was also not happy with Zeratul’s ending.  He was my favorite character after Brood War, but the events of Legacy of the Void place him overall lower than Tassadar for me.  At least the legacy of Tassadar was untouched!  I have to say, though, the single most amazing thing to come out of Legacy of the Void was Alarak.  The moment I heard his voice, I knew it was John de Lancie.  I’m a big Star Trek fan too, and Alarak is basically Q as a Protoss.  He is fantastic.

Although I was disappointed in the plot of Legacy of the Void, I love the addition of Co-Op Commanders to the game.  It adds interesting side missions, but more importantly, it gives me a mode where I can play with my husband, whom I otherwise can’t play with because he is way better at the game than I am.  Speaking of my husband, he spends almost all of his free time playing StarCraft.  I knew it was love when I found out he played StarCraft.  Haha. 😉
