Red Velvet Ombre Cake

Red Velvet Ombre Cake

Last week was my husband’s birthday, so I made another cake!  He requested red velvet cake, and I still had some leftover vanilla cake mix from my rainbow cake project, so I decided to try a pink-red ombre cake.  It’s appropriate for Valentine’s Day too (his birthday is the day after Valentine’s Day)!  The red velvet cake mix was already a very deep red, so I couldn’t get much color variation out of it.  I bought white icing roses and painted them pink and gold with edible pearl dust.  Sadly the icing roses aren’t good to eat.  They’re pretty solid and hard, making them difficult to bite into.  The blossoms I used on the rainbow cake were easier to eat because they’re smaller.  Both flowers are rather tasteless though (they’re not even sweet), so you might as well just use plastic flowers.  Then you can reuse the flowers, too.
