My Baby Boy Aesthetic: Blue Skies With Rainbows

My son at 4 months in his rainbow pajamas

When I found out I was having a boy, I was a little sad I wouldn’t be able to indulge my girly aesthetic to its fullest, but fortunately, blue is my second favorite color.  In fact, turquoise was my favorite color as a child.  I was obsessed with it.  Anyway, I’m not against pink for boys, but I didn’t want to make things… unnecessarily complicated.  So instead of pink with pastel rainbows, my baby aesthetic is blue skies with rainbows.  Actually, it works out pretty well. Happy, sunny, colorful days!

These blue pajamas with rainbows and tiny hearts were my favorite!  I loved them so much I bought them in two sizes.  The sheets with the light blue paw prints are totally adorable, too (cats!). Sadly, it was hard to actually find baby things I liked, especially since gray has been such a huge trend.  I even saw some things with a gray “rainbow” (grayscale arches) print.  Seriously?  I don’t dislike gray.  In fact, I quite like gray.  But it’s too much!  When I was browsing the baby section on some web sites, I felt like I was viewing the site in grayscale mode.  Where’s the color?  I need color!

This muslin blanket with rainbow music notes was a lucky find.  The music notes are actually in the shape of a heart!  Fortunately I was able to find plenty of cute muslin blankets.  The ones I bought are no longer available, but check out these cute ones with kitties, berries, berries and lemons, and butterflies.  For the first couple months we didn’t even bother with clothes and just kept our son wrapped in blankets (an advantage of having a summer baby). He was quite the escape artist, though, and as you can see above, he would sleep on his side, because he was skinny as a newborn and couldn’t balance on his back (apparently that’s a thing).  It was hard to keep him wrapped up, and he was too small for velcro swaddles at first.

I hunted up and down and finally found one sleep sack that was small enough for him, in a cute blue star print.  Once he got a little bigger, there were plenty of options for cute sleep sacks.  I ended up with a lot of star print stuff , because those are easy to find everywhere.  It’s also just a good neutral print that’s not too busy.  A lot of “little boy” prints are dinosaurs, safari animals, sports, or vehicles, and I’m not into any of those.  For some reason, rainbows and cats seem to be categorized as “girl prints”.  Why are we still labeling things by gender when the only difference is the design printed on them?  I have definitely bought blankets, pajamas, pacifiers, shoes, dishes, and other things labeled “for girls”.  What year is it?  They should be labeled by color and pattern only.

More of my favorites: peach, yellow, and mint star pajamas, a rainbow blanket in similar colors, and blue and white star crib sheets.  These pajamas and the pastel rainbow ones below were definitely marked “for girls”.  Same with the orange kitty sleep sack.  Well, they look perfectly adorable on my little boy! 🙂

Look at this happy little guy!  He ate a lot and quickly caught up in weight.  He was actually very round at that time…. Errr, and so was I…..

LOOK AT THOSE CHEEKS, AHHH!!!!

That precious expression!  He’s probably wondering why Mommy has dragged him outside, because we are both vampires who rarely see the sun.  But look at those cheeks!  Those are the cheeks you just want to squish.  They aren’t quite that round any more, haha.  I have a confession.  I don’t think newborns are cute.  Mine was a scrawny alien dude with terrible skin.  Then at 3-4 months he suddenly became the cutest thing in the entire world.  I had almost thought there was something wrong with me, not thinking my newborn was cute, because it’s a mommy’s job to think her kid is the cutest.  Turns out I’m functional after all, he just needed to grow a little. 🙂

As we got back into the warmer months, rompers became my favorite thing to dress my little boy in.  This cute rainbow striped romper is from Primary.  They have all kinds of basics in a wide range of colors, including rainbows.  I got pajamas, pants, tees, and socks from them as well.  Can I gloat for a second about how many rainbow things (clothes, toys, etc.) I managed to find that stop at blue for whatever reason?  Perfect for a weirdo like me who has a strange dislike for purple.

At the park, finally putting my pink plaid picnic blanket to use!  Yes, we’re outside.  The pediatrician said we had to stop being vampires.

Now my kiddo is an active toddler, and the family room constantly looks like a hurricane swept through.  At least it’s a colorful mess?  Sorry, it’s not cute.  We actually don’t have our son’s room set up yet, so no photos of a cute nursery, either.  His room is on the other side of the house, and we’re not ready to be that far away from him at night, as he’s only just started sleeping through the night consistently.  We have a large master bedroom, so his crib easily fits in there.  It’ll be fun to set his room up once he’s ready.  I hope he likes rainbows! 🙂
