Last weekend I went to WonderCon! I haven’t been to WonderCon since 2013, and actually I hadn’t been planning to go this year until my friends in Cosplay on the Rocks invited me to join them in their awesome masquerade group. I had so much fun with them. WonderCon has gotten pretty big, and now it’s really starting to feel like the good old days of SDCC. The SDCC masquerade was always my favorite, but the con is becoming such a hassle to go to, so it’s great that we have WonderCon, which is run by the same group.
For WonderCon masquerade, Cosplay on the Rocks did an Alice in Wonderland skit where we designed dresses based on the Flowers of Wonderland and recreated the scene where the flowers sing “All in the Golden Afternoon” with Alice. It’s one of those things that you’d never think about doing, but once someone comes up with the idea, you think, “Wow! That’s a fantastic idea! Why yes, I would LOVE to be a giant rose, THANKS FOR ASKING!” Haha. 😀 I really did have a lot of fun with this costume, and I think our skit turned out really cute.
We won Honorable Mention: Judges’ Choice. I think the best compliment we received was from the den parents and backstage staff, though. They were impressed that we did not need help with our costumes and could get around by ourselves with large skirts, bustles, and awkward headpieces. It pays to put planning into not only how your costume looks but how it is worn and transported. 🙂
There were many great costumes at the masquerade, great job to all of them! The best thing about the masquerade though was the positive atmosphere backstage. Everyone we talked to was friendly and supportive. I hope to be back next year!
