After discovering the joys of building gingerbread houses, I couldn’t possibly pass up a Super Mario Gingerbread Castle! I bought this in 2019, but you can still get them. It seems Wilton has been making these for a while. I picked it up at Michael’s, of all places, and I saw an ad for them at JoAnn too. The castle is pretty simple, and sadly the gingerbread isn’t very good, but putting this together was a fun little diversion for a game fan like myself.
The kit doesn’t actually come with very many gumdrops, but it gives you tons of candy stars and coins. The printed candy pieces (Mario and the two mushrooms) are hard as rock and not worth eating. I wasn’t a fan of the fondant (both working with it and eating it), and we didn’t even use the black icing. Oops, and the tray is backwards.
The kit also comes with a mushroom cookie. I didn’t like the idea of covering it in fondant, so I used some red and green glitter icing I just happened to have.
We had trouble getting the pieces to stick, and I couldn’t turn the castle around to get pictures without it falling apart, so here is a picture of all of the pieces separately. Mario has busted this castle down! (Where’s the princess?? Oops! In another castle!)
Honestly, the kit was ok, but I wouldn’t particularly recommend it unless you’re a huge fan and can get it on sale.
