Yoshino Nanase – Wake Up, Girls!

First worn: San Francisco J-pop Summit 2014

When this series was announced, it caught my attention right away… Wake Up, Girls? You mean Morning Musume? Hah. I also thought the girls were very cute. I was immediately drawn to Yoppi of course, because like Chihaya she’s a cool type with long dark hair. But THIS time, the blue-haired beauty’s image color is TURQUOISE! NOT BLUE. OMG. My second favorite color! I was so tired of blue! (But there’s no pink? Huh.) Wake Up, Girls! actually turned out to be a very good series, one of my favorites even. I love that it tries to give a more realistic view of the idol industry and the struggles young girls face as they try to become idols. And is it just me, or is this series also about Morning Musume vs. AKB48? I think my favorite thing about this series is that it appears to attack AKB and its system (which I won’t get into here, but I HATE AKB and will not support any of their groups). Thank you, Wake Up, Girls! Character-wise, Yoppi did turn out to be my favorite, no surprise there. It was like fate. She’s fashionable, responsible, hard-working, and determined. She’s also the leader of the group (for once an anime takes a realistic look at how that works), so I loved seeing her deal with her duties as leader too. As for the costume, I’m not a huge fan of green, but I think the design of these outfits, although simple, is extremely flattering! I love the silhouette. A friend asked me to cosplay WUG with her at AX 2014 because the director for the series was a guest. I jumped at the chance to make this costume because I love WUG so much (I’d already performed “Tachiagare!” at Fanime)! I was able to whip this up with poplin from my stash (leftover green from Kagome! Plus I always have white) and patterns I already had – the only thing I had to buy was bias tape for the stripes! Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to wear it at AX though, so I wore it a few weeks later at J-pop Summit.
