MAX (Changmin) – TVXQ! “Why (Keep Your Head Down)” (Genderbend Version)

First worn: K-con 2015

TVXQ! (rather Tohoshinki, because I listen to them in Japanese) is one of my favorite music groups ever! I was sooo excited when they came to LA for their first U.S. concert. That was my first Kpop concert, and my first concert outside of a convention (although ironically it happened during AX in 2013, but was not connected to the convention). I went with some friends, including someone who used to cosplay and whom I knew in passing, but did not know she was into Kpop. We started doing once-a-week Kpop nights with another friend, so I got to know her better, and we started going to Kcon together. After cosplaying Girls’ Generation in 2014, we started thinking about what we would wear in 2015, and we came up with the idea of doing genderbend TVXQ! costumes, since TVXQ! helped bring us together.

We picked “Why” because the outfits are probably the most recognizable (it’s also an awesome song, and their comeback song as a duo). I made jackets for both of us, and we pieced together the rest with bought items (with miniskirts instead of pants, and long hair). LET ME TELL YOU about how weird those jackets are! U-KNOW (Yunho) has this jacket-vest-longcoat thing going on (split half and half on the front and long in the back), and MAX (Changmin) has a cape and sleeves hanging off the back of his vest as if he had a jacket draped over his shoulders, only they’re attached. O.o We also had fun with rhinestones. Yunho has rhinestones on his shoes, so my friend glued rhinestones to a pair of pumps. Changmin has one glove with weird metal studs or something on them, but I decided to do rhinestones as well to match my friend’s shoes. We had so much fun in these outfits and got a lot of fabulous photos! We only got one or two people recognizing our outfits, but it’s ok… Kpop cosplay isn’t a big thing, and TVXQ! is kind of an older group…. never mind the whole genderbent thing adding to the confusion. I never thought I would be cosplaying TVXQ!, but I’ve been super excited about these outfits all year. I LOVE TVXQ!!! <3 <3 <3
